How To Stop Condensation On Air Ducts (2022)

How To Stop Condensation In Your AC Ducts

Air conditioner ducts are likely to experience sweating or condensation frequently. Your AC system is expected to experience serious issues with long-term condensation. It often presents as water drops start collecting on the exterior part of the AC ducts and around the openings of the vents. You may also notice some small pools of water on the floor if the problem is severe.

What Causes Condensation In HVAC Ducts?

The main causes of condensation in the AC ducts come from the temperature differences between the AC vent and the outside air. It may also be caused by a lack of insulation around the AC ducts and poorly sealed AC ducts. However, sweating on the AC ducts may also be aggravated by certain factors such as:

  • Dirty air filters
  • Too much air moisture
  • Clogged ducts

Why Is There Water Dripping From My Ductwork?

Condensate drain problems may result in water dripping from the ductwork. The condensate drain system collects moisture accumulated from the air before disposing it into a drain. You may notice some water leakage if:

  • There is clogging in the condensate tube from minerals, algae, or dirt
  • The drip tray is leaking
  • If the evaporator coil starts thawing since it freezes on hot days

Can Too Much Insulation Cause Condensation?

Yes, extreme insulation may cause condensation. This happens when the insulation warms the interior of your property. Warm air contains more moisture, making your home or commercial building more humid. As the temperature changes, the building will become cooler in the evening. The air inside the property starts cooling down, thereby releasing more moisture, causing condensation.

Does Wrapping Ductwork To Prevent Condensation

Yes, you can prevent condensation if you try wrapping the ductwork. It has an inner layer made out of foam insulation, and the outer layer is made out of foil. Wrap it properly around the AC duct and use duct tape to fasten it around the joints.

Tips For Preventing Condensation On My Air Conditioner

Here are some of the best tips to stop condensation.

  • Rather than using metal, different types of insulation materials, such as fiberglass, for the ductwork. They should be properly wrapped with fiberglass insulation if you have metal ducts.
  • Reduce the amount of humidity in the air found in the air ducts. A dehumidifier should be able to do a good job.
  • Unblock the ducts that may be restricting airflow and clean them regularly.
  • Make sure your air filters are cleaned regularly (at least once every 3 months)
  • Repair any leaking ducts as early as possible
