What Is The Function Of The Air Compressor?
A majority of air conditioners operate while applying an accurate component balance. The balance is what helps make a home cool in the hot, humid Florida summer. Every part of an AC must always be in excellent operating condition, for the whole unit to be effective and efficient. However, the truth of the matter is that some components need special attention – one of them being the compressor. Infarct, the compressor is considered as the heart of the whole unit.
In other words, without a working compressor, you will not have cold air; but with a good compressor and other things that do not work, you may still have fresh air.
Air Conditioner Compressor Cost
If your air conditioner compressor fails or experiences problems, you should replace it. Get in touch with All Time Air Conditioning to speak with a professional in Boynton Beach, Florida. With them, you do not have to worry about the time; they are available 24 hours a day. In other words, they also offer 24 hours’ emergency AC services.
Air Conditioner Compressor Basics
With standard central ACs found in many homes (split air conditioning system), the outdoor unit houses the compressor. For this reason, the outdoor unit’s primary work is to circulate needed refrigerant through pipes so that heat exchange would be possible. The function of electricity is to ruin the compressor and fan only.
NOTE: The fan does not provide cooling on its own, not unless you run the unit in ‘Fan Mode’ only. The primary use of electricity in the group is running the compressor.
The compressor is run using a motor or engine power. The motor is designed like an ordinary engine (it has a piston and cylinder). When the motor is operating, the compressor compresses the gases, which in turn increases the temperature of the refrigerant. This intron turns the refrigerant into a high pressured gas. The gas is then forced through the likes into outdoor coils where the heat is released, and the vapor condenses back to liquid. After condensation, the fluid is then redirected back to the indoor unit, where the refrigerant evaporated into gas and absorbed heat. Then it goes into the compressor, and the cycle continues.
Air Conditioner Compressor Types
Many air conditioner manufactures offer two compressor types, which are:
• A reciprocating compressor
• A scroll-type compressor
The Reciprocating Compressor
A reciprocating compressor is powered by a motor just like in a vehicle (meaning it has pistons and cylinder). External power compresses the refrigerant, which is contained in the cylinder. This type of compressor comes in 3 different types:
Open type
Semi-hermetically
Hermetically sealed
• The Scroll-Type Compressor
This type of compressor features two interleaved scrolls, which one is fixed and the other orbits oddly without rotating. When it is doing this, it leaves small gaps between the scroll, where the gas is compressed. The scroll shape may include a hybrid curve, Archimedean spiral, or involute. The general, the principle of a scroll, type compressor, is that they must rotate to provide compression.
Scroll type compressors are expensive compared to their opposites but proven to be active and high performing. Because manufacturers take advantage of both types of compressors in their unit, it would be wise to do some research to identify the best for you.
Air Conditioner Refrigerant Types Used
There are many types of refrigerants used today in AC systems. For this reason, having the right kind of refrigerant is paramount, depending on your system and the amount of air conditioning system. Remember, too much or too little refrigerant will harm the compressor.
• The R-22
This type of refrigerant was used until 2010. In the year 2015, the production of this type of refrigerant was discontinued. This product went by the name of Freon®. Contribution to the ozone layer is the main reason it was abandoned, and it contained HCFC (hydrochlorofluorocarbon)
• The R-410A
This refrigerant type goes by the name of Genertron AZ-20®, Suva® 9100, or Puron®, and has been approved for use in new models. The R-410A is used in commercial AC systems as well.
• The R-407C
Referred to as Genetron® 407C or Suva ® 407C, this type of refrigerant contains similar characterizes to R-22 but does not affect the ozone layer in any way. As such, it can be used as a substitute for the R-22. It has also been proven to use similar conventions in the operating pressure.
NOTE: R-410A has been proven not to contain chlorine by EPA, which makes it environmentally friendly. This is the reason why it is used in commercial based ACs. Also, a majority of high-end products use this type of refrigerant.
Air Conditioner Compressor Repairs
The truth is that compressors undergo a great deal of stress, especially during the cooling season in Florida. On the other hand, they undergo wear and tear like any other moving part or motor. Also, dust and grim affects compressors, making them demand replacements. Malfunction of the engine will also affect cooling. Compressors also develop leakages at connectors, which makes them to lose refrigerant. Furthermore, a minute decrease in the coolant may can the compressor to be damaged. All these are causes that affect compressors demanding a replacement.
